The KreativeInc Websites team recently worked as a sub-contractor with the brilliant people at Access Design Studio (ADS) to fix A11Y code errors on one of the websites of their large international clients.

A11Y is a popular abbreviation for website accessibility, as the word ‘accessibility’ consists of 11 letters between their first and last letters. It’s a clever way to avoid endless spelling mistakes, don’t you think?

Access Design Studio is based in California, USA and specialises in accessible website development and remediation. And for good reason; in the USA, litigation surrounding website accessibility is at an all-time high. The Access Design Studio team design and develop accessible websites and run quarterly audits on their clients’ existing websites to help them with being sustainable and ethical and avoid expensive lawsuits.

We have a longstanding working relationship with Access Design Studio and our expertise in web A11y made us the ideal partner for ADS when they have subcontract requirements.

ADS had already audited the website and supplied a report and list of A11y errors for Callum to fix. He removed most of the errors, except for those caused by third-party extensions. These extensions, or plug-ins, inject code into a website to enhance its functionality. In a lot of cases, this code is not accessible and very difficult to alter. Particularly when a change to the extension’s default functionality is required. ADS addressed these issues in the accessibility statement, which is sadly the only option in these scenarios, until the developers of such plug-ins make them accessible. Overall, the project was a great success, and we applaud the client on making every effort to have accessible web platforms.

If you are an agency, looking for an A11y web developer, either to design and develop accessible web platforms or to remediate your client’s accessibility code as a subcontract option for your development team, feel free to get in touch.
